What Makes a Family? Supporting All Parents at Mums and Bubs Clinic

At Mums and Bubs Clinic, we know that families come in all shapes and sizes. A family is simply a unit where love and care are at the centre. Whether you’re a birthing parent, a non-birthing parent, part of a blended or rainbow family, or any other unique combination, we are here to support you every step of the way.

Pregnancy and Parenting: Powerful and Life-Changing

The journey of pregnancy and early parenting brings profound changes to all parents, whether or not they gave birth. It can bring joy, but also challenges—particularly if there’s a history of pregnancy loss or unique family dynamics.

For example:

  • Fathers: Whether actively raising the child or navigating co-parenting, fathers play an integral role in their child’s life.
  • Rainbow Families: LGBTQ+ parents, including same-sex couples, single parents, surrogates, or gender-diverse families, enrich the diversity of parenting experiences.
  • Blended Families: Combining children from previous relationships into one loving home creates new dynamics and bonds.

Bonding as a Non-Birthing Parent

Non-birthing parents often wonder how to connect with their newborn. The good news? Babies are ready to bond from birth!

Here are some ways to build that connection:

  • Get hands-on: Skin-to-skin contact, daily care, and one-on-one time (like bath time or walks) help build trust.
  • Learn your baby’s cues: Babies communicate through sounds, movements, and cries. Understanding these will deepen your bond.
  • Support feeding: Whether it’s burping, bottle-feeding expressed milk, or dream feeds, your involvement matters.
  • Play and comfort: Playing with your baby and soothing them when upset fosters love and trust.

Supporting your partner and nurturing your relationship is equally important. Be positive, supportive, and open to negotiation when challenges arise. A strong partnership benefits not only your baby but also your shared journey as parents.

At the same time, don’t forget to prioritise self-care. Taking time to look after yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. Feeling good physically and emotionally gives you the energy to care for your baby and support your partner effectively.

Mental Health for All Parents

Parenthood can be emotionally taxing for both birthing and non-birthing parents. Feeling flat, irritable, or overwhelmed is normal, but prolonged symptoms like low mood, fatigue, or withdrawal might indicate perinatal depression or anxiety.

Definitions

  • Antenatal depression: depression during pregnancy.
  • Postnatal Depression: depression that occurs after birth.
  • Perinatal depression: a combination of antenatal and postnatal depression conditions together.

People with antenatal or postnatal depression often also have antenatal or postnatal anxiety. Symptoms can include a racing heart, constant worry and restlessness.

Symptoms can include:

  • Changes in mood: Anger, guilt, or feeling disconnected.
  • Cognitive challenges: Trouble concentrating, intrusive thoughts, or feelings of inadequacy.
  • Physical effects: Fatigue, appetite changes, or sleep difficulties.
  • Behavioural shifts: Avoiding baby care or feeling distant from your partner.

Support for Non-Birthing Parents

Depression and anxiety can affect all parents, including fathers and LGBTQ+ partners. These challenges may be compounded by societal expectations, discrimination, or navigating the complexities of parenting. LGBTIQ+ partners may also have to manage their own pregnancy or parental loss. We are here for you.
